YEAH, you thought that I forgot about this bad boy. Well, to be honest I did. It was senior year and I was drunk with the heady power of college nostalgia. Now I am a college graduate and extremely unemployed, which is how I have come to rediscover this thing. Kinda like Columbus with America. All my other posts have been mere Viking expeditions into the world of blogging, but from here on out, it's all Spanish, mainly a journal of my job hunting experiences. So if you accidentally stumble upon this, here is the run down.
I just graduated from Virginia Tech.
I majored in Communications/Broadcast production (why?) and English (I like books and writing)
I’m looking for a job in the broadcast industry. Hopefully Sports probably News.
And I have been at it for about a week.
Basically I would really like to get into sports broadcasting. Over this last semester I worked on a show called "Virginia Tech Sports" ,and I really enjoyed it. So, my lofty goal is to hopefully make that a career.
I’ve been applying for jobs and my ideal would be to get a job with Comcast Sports Net. It's local and they do some good work. One of my professors said that regional sports networks are often over looked by graduates and that it's not unreasonable to start out there. Maybe it’s a bit advantageous trying to break into the number market but I’m confident.
But is television really going to be my career? I'm not totally sold on it, to be honest. I'm still kicking around the idea of law school, and maybe getting into the PR industry. It seems like a law degree would be useful, especially communications law (with the growth of social media) and I really liked the law class that I took last semester. I know that it was undergrad and really was nothing like an actual factual law class, but I found the material to be interesting, and it required some thinking, so that's got to count for something.
Having mentioned my doubts about the television industry as a career I have an interview tomorrow in Charlottesville. It should be interesting. If I get it I'm not sure if I'll accept it. The position isn't that great, but in this job market, who am I to be greedy with work? Should I take this opportunity as a sign of upcoming job prosperity where I can be selective and see what else comes down, or should I just jump at the first thing?
In the words of Arrested Development, "I've made a huge a mistake." (See posts below) But tonight “I'm going to rest my chemistry” - one of the two songs I actually like on the new/old Interpol.
